Can I Do The Work Myself?
OK. This is an incredibly loaded question. Can you do the work yourself? Of course! Anyone who wants to do all of the work absolutely can, and also have the benefit of stepping back and admiring not only a finished, beautiful, space, but a space that they themselves transformed. But there is certainly more to it than that. Not only will doing the work yourself take more muscle grease, it will also mean the bathroom is out of working order for longer than if it were done by a contractor. Consider whether or not you have another option for bathroom usage while this one is under construction. If so, then you will be less stressed to finish this one is such a short amount of time. So you have to work hard, and spend more time… where is the good in doing it yourself?
Well aside from knowing that you completed the space, there can be substantial money savings in doing a project yourself. In fact twenty five percent of a job, or more, is contributed to the labor costs involved in the remodel. When you hire a contractor, you pay the contractor as well as the laborers contracted by him or her. Also if you hire an architect, interior architect, or interior designer, you will be shelling out big dollar signs for that service, when often, some study on your own can allow you to control this process.
If you have some knowledge of piping, pluming, electricity, and heating and ventilation, you can do almost all of the work yourself, if not all of it. Even if you have little knowledge, but research the process, or have a friend of family member who is knowledgeable you can do most of the work. Unfortunately many of us do not have knowledge in these areas, nor do we have personal electricians in the family. It is strongly advised that if you do know understand plumbing, electricity, etc, that you allow contractors to do this work. Make sure you always used licensed and insured contractors. A significant chunk of change can still be saved just by paying only electricians and plumbers to do this work, while you and your family manage the rest of the process.
Another consideration that you need not overlook is materials and supplies if you choose to do the work yourself. While you can significantly reduce the overall cost of the project by doing to work yourself, this may not be true if you have to go out and buy all of your supplies before beginning. Supplies for tiling, installing shower doors, painting, demolition, and other tasks should all be figured in before you decide to do the work yourself. You should always consider asking friends and relatives if they have tools you can borrow before buying, and larger tools, like wet saws for tiling can sometime be rented. Renting can save you a huge amount over purchasing the tools and equipment.
