Seeking Inspiration for Remodeling Project
Filed under Getting Started
Ok, so maybe this bathroom remodel has been on your mind since moving in over ten years ago! Then again, maybe you just had it today after all those mornings of attempting to get ready in a poorly designed layout not even worthy of being titled: bathroom! Whichever the case, you need a solid and thorough inspiration of what your space will look like the day you move your personal items back in. Even if you already have some sort of vision in your mind, it is best to get that vision from your mind and on to paper. While you very well may be flipping through a magazine at mid construction and decide that you MUST have that tile, it is better to at least try to have those decisions made before construction begins. So where do go for quality inspiration? Everywhere! Start by purchasing design magazines at your local book store. This is a great way to get your notebook or journal started. Even if you are torn between design styles, for example, you love the modern look, but the rest of your home, and your husband, prefer traditional, you should still consider both possibilities. In this case it is a great idea to purchase two note books. Traditional Bathrooms I Love, and Modern Bathrooms I Love. You should start collecting clippings from magazines and dividing them into your two notebooks. These collections could even be subdivided into vanities, water closets, showers, baths, etc. Another affordable way to get clippings without the purchase of tons of magazines is to visit your local public library. Use the magazines and design books there and print color copies. Often copies are much cheaper than buying magazines and your range of images is far greater.
While finding clippings is a great way to create your notebook of ideas, you certainly should do more than this. A picture can only do so much for you. You must see bathroom spaces in person as well. A wonderful place to start is at home improvement stores. Most large home improvement chains will have bathroom scenes setup for you to see in person. You can walk up to a vanity and get a feel for using it every morning. Is it large enough to store your personal items? Do you have plenty of counter space? Another great place to get ideas and to see a full scale bathroom with state of the art, high end fixtures and furnishings, is by taking a home tour of visiting a local opened house. These homes are opened to the public and often professionally designed with every bell and whistle available.
You should eventually see a trend take place in your preference. Perhaps your home is done traditionally because it is a traditional period home, but you are drawn to the modern elements found in state of the art design? Be creative and infuse your likes together to create one harmonious design plan.
